Project Prompt: Select a “game-changing” invention and create a two-page magazine layout about the object
Design a double-page spread layout. Proper use of all typographic rules is mandatory! Consider typographic elements such as scale, hierarchies, and appropriate fonts; and layout elements such as margin/gutter space, and type and image relationships
I began my research by looking into “game-changing innovations” of the 20th and 21st century and searching through Google to jot down ideas that interested me. I listed around 20+ cool innovations that I particularly liked, and then I did the process of elimination based on what I thought would have better content and visual potential for my design. Eventually I narrowed it down to three main ideas: the jukebox, the zipper, and the GPS. I gathered some pictures for reference as moodboards to show the idea of what direction I was going for, and after doing some sketches and reading through the articles, I decided to go for the jukebox. The two articles I found related to the jukebox both talk about its influence for its time as well as its’ impact on how we listen to music today. I also enjoy the title of both articles, “The Charm of the Jukebox” and “How the Jukebox Got Its Groove.” I chose the first article because I personally enjoyed reading it, and I found some phrases and sentences that I thought would be really interesting to pull out into bigger quotes in my layout.
